Culture in Karang Asem

Gotong Royong


Like generally in Bali, the Karangasem regency in social life, are supported by the spirit of mutual cooperation; both to public and the members of society's purposes. Such a way of help is known as "Gotong Royong". This becomes an essential part of life to be members of society who need helps one to another in many things. Everything is done together without expecting any rewards.

Balinese Dances


Music and dance are inseparable from religion in Bali. Dances in Bali are classified into two kinds namely: performing dance and sacred dance. The performing (bebalihan) dances are dance generally played for entertainment, while the sacred (wali) dances are dances can just be played to accompany certain religious ceremonies. There are various kind of performing dances such as bumblebee dance, war dance, dances for choosing a meet, dances for welcoming the guests, etc., while the sacred dances are like pendet dances, Rejang devas dances, Sanghyang Trance Dances, Topeng Dances, ets.
Angklung


Angklung (known as Angklung Kelentungan) is a typical set of traditional music instrument that is made of four pieces of metals, producing four tones. This kind of gamelan produces sad, melancholic, and lulling dynamic tones. Angklung is the oldest form of gamelan, dating back to tenth century. Generally, Angklung is played to accompany a cremation ceremony.

Gong Kebyar

Gong Kabyar originates from north Bali. It is usually as an accompaniment to dances. The development of gong kebyar as now based on the lelegongan tune. Such a kind of gong can be used for various kinds of purpose, both to accompany dances and temple festivals.
Baleganjur


Baleganjur is completed with additional instruments (knows as angklung) made of bamboo stems. The combnination of Baleganjur and angklung instruments is called "kocokan". This kocokan is generally performed at the ceremonies or ather event.

Genjek
Genjek is one of at in Karangsem regency. The unique thing in genjek is that there's a custom to drink palm wine (from palm tress) before they perform the genjek. The main purpose is to make the song they sing more attractively. Genjek at first was just to spend a spare time by the villagers gathering and singing together. Usually the song is about social life and intercourse. Genjek can be combining with a dance called"jogged" spontaneously.
Magibung

Magibung is some unique tradition about haow to eat in certain event where shows a gathering of the society in sadness and happiness, which has some rules. There must be one portion rice put in a plate made of leafs called "aled". One more aled contains of lawar, sate, komoh and sambal embe ( fried union, fried chili and salt ), water or palm whine and basehan (water put in a bowl to washing hands). Usually enjoyed the last is drinking water or palm wine. Magibung usually held in some activity such as ceremony or other traditional work in Karangasem Regency.

Ngaben
Ngaben is a unique traditional ceremony in Bali that is also practiced in Karangsem Regency. It is a holy ritual for the soul of the dead. This is ceremony is done by the children of the dead, where they are responsible for carrying out the ceremony. This ceremony is intended to return the spirit of the dead to be united to the creator, Ida Sanghyang Widhi Wasa. According to Hindu doctrine practiced in Bali, this ceremony is considered as the last ceremony of one's circle of life in the world.
Otonan


It is ceremony held by the parents to their children to ask for salvation to Gold ( Ida Sanghyang Widhi Wasa) practiced once in six months (based upon Balinese Calendar calculation ). Another purpose of this ceremony is also to pay homage to Sanghyang Ibu Pertiwi expecting to the children have long and lucky life.
